Day 2: Behind the Mountains (B, PL, D)
Breakfast at hotel. Pick up from hotel between 7:40am and 8:00am and transfer to BSI bus terminal where you will meet the other travelers and your guide before you board a scheduled (unguided) bus that takes travelers into the highland wilderness during the summer. The route is a scenic one, heading by the legendary Mt. Hekla and the many other volcanoes of the Domadalur area. Arrive in Landmannalaugar around noon. Eat lunch, get your gear together that you will use during today's hike and start off! The route takes you south into the mountains. Pass small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges. Arrive at Hraftinnusker mountain hut in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight here.
Overnight: Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut

Day 3: Glaciers and Lakes (B,PL,D)
Breakfast at mountain hut. Pack your lunch for the day in your day pack and stow your gear for transfer. From Hrafntinnusker, descend down into the gullies of Jokultungur with hundreds of steaming hot springs and mud pools. Enjoy a great view south to the Alftavatn (Swan Lake) area and the Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull Glaciers. This afternoon's destination is the Alftavatn mountain hut where you will overnight and have dinner.
Overnight: Alfavatn Mountain Hut

Day 4: Volcanoes and Canyons (B, PL, D)
Today hike by the foot of the green conic volcano, Storasula, before entering the black deserts of Maelifellssandur. Head towards another old volcano, Hattfell, and enter the Emstrur region where farmers once grazed their sheep during the summer. Visit the magnificent Markarfljot canyon that slices almost 656 feet down in the rocks south of Hattfell. Overnight at the Botnar mountain hut.
Overnight: Botnar Mountain Hut

Day 5: Towards the Woods of Thor (B,PL, D)
Continue up and down into the small valleys and gullies of Emstur. The great Myrdalsjokull Glacier is only a few miles away from where our group hikes! Towards the end of the day you will notice the vegetation growing denser and higher and you descend into Thorsmork (the Woods of Thor). This area is beloved by Icelanders, a stunning wilderness oasis with green valleys, tiny birch forests and rich flower fields. Surrounding all are silvery glaciers.
Overnight: Thorsmork Mountain Hut

Day 6: Farewell to the Highlands (B, PL)
After breakfast, take a walk to Songhellir (The Song Cave) and the small mountain of Valahnukur where you can savor a magnificent view of the highland wilderness. After lunch, the group and your guide take the scheduled (unguided) bus from Thorsmork back to Reykjavik. The tour ends at the BSI bus terminal. On your own, transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik for last night (not included, cabs plentiful). Overnight in Reykjavik, a high tech and culturally rich city perched on the edge of the wilderness. Perhaps you will treat yourself to dinner at one of the many fine restaurants and enjoy the city's legendary nightlife.

Day 7: Homeward Bound (B)
Catch some last minute sightseeing and shopping before boarding the Fly Bus at your hotel for your afternoon transfer to Keflavik Airport. Complimentary snacks, soft drinks and in-seat entertainment system during flight.  Meals, headsets and blankets available for purchase or provide your own.
