Day 2: Get your car from hertz and head into the Land of Fire and Ice. Today you'll experience a little of both, from bubbling hot springs to magnificent glaciers. From the Old Norse language "Geysir" applies to region where the wondrous Strokkur spouts steam and hot water as if on cue. Be sure to photograph the majestic Golden Falls and its rainbow. Allow plenty time to visit Thingvellir National Park, where the world's oldest surviving Parliament first met a millennium ago and where the MidAtlantic ridge runs through Iceland. Optional activities (booked in Iceland): Whitewater rafting in the Geysir area, ATV quad biking in Haukadalur Valley. (B)
Day 3: There are many sites to see today: puffins near Dyrholaey, a rocky promontory with a keyhole so large that a boat can sail through. Photograph two famous waterfalls, including one which you can walk behind. If it looks familiar, it was featured on the "The Amazing Race". You can make it a long day under the light of the midnight sun, and then overnight in the area. (B)
Day 4: Drive past scenic glaciers en route to the surreal Jokulsarlon, the glacial lagoon, where centuries-old icebergs float as they follow the path to the sea. In this area is Iceland's highest mountain, which rises nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. Below the mountains, surrounded by edges of the glacier, is Skaftafell National Park. Optional activity (booked in Iceland): Glacial Lagoon boat tour (B)
Day 5: Continue through magnificent eastern fjords, where the road winds below high and steep mountains, skirting narrow bays and odd stone structures rising from the sea. Marvel at red, yellow and green rhyolite mountains next to the sometimes-steep roads passing picturesque fishing villages. Optional activities (booked in Iceland): Jeep tour to Vatnajokull glacier, boat tour to Papey Island, visit to Petra'a Stone Collection (B)
Day 6 Today you'll drive over Eastern Highlands to Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall , and past cliffs proclaimed to be formed by a magical horse's hoof. Geologists believe a long forgotten waterfall produced the formations, but everyone agrees the scenery is dramatic. In Husavik village you should make a point to try the whale-watching excursion (optional, arranged in Iceland) (B)
Day 7: Myvatn is one Iceland's most beautiful lakes. Since 1974 it has been a nature preserve protected by strict laws. Located on the active fault between Europe and America, this is one of the
most interesting geological areas in the country. Dormant and active volcanoes create a spectacular skyline, and bubbling mud pools are hot enough to boil eggs! Check out the eerie lava formations Icelanders call the "Dark Castles" before continuing your tour. (B)
Day 8: Iceland's Ring Road winds through majestic mountains, across salmon-filled rivers and past timeless villages. Stop for a photo opportunity at Godafoss, the waterfall of the gods. In Akureyri. You might want to visit the world's most northern botanical gardens and try the swimming pool, one of Iceland's best (not included). Continue your journey across the North of Iceland.
