CEO and Senior Management

The senior management team under the leadership of the CEO Björgólfur Jóhannsson comprises seven Vice Presidents. All have significant management experience in their field of operations.

Björgólfur Jóhannsson, President and CEO, Icelandair Group
Björgólfur Jóhannsson became President and CEO of Icelandair Group on 15 January 2008. Prior to his appointment, he was CEO of Icelandic Group from March 2006 to January 2008. His previous appointment, from 1999, was as Managing Director of Síldarvinnslan, and from 1996 he was Managing Director of Innovation and Development for Samherji. Mr Jóhannsson was Financial Director of Útgerdarfélag Akureyringa 1992–96, and from 1980 he worked in accountancy for Sig. Stefánsson, Accountants and Endurskodun Akureyri hf. He has been Chairman of L.Í.Ú. since 2003. He graduated with a degree in Business Studies from the University of Iceland in 1983.

Birkir Hólm Guðnason, Chief Executive Officer CEO at Icelandair
Birkir Hólm Guðnason was appointed CEO of Icelandair in May 2008. Birkir has been with Icelandair for eight years and his latest position being the General Manager for Scandinavia. First as Sales Manager in Iceland, then as Sales Manager in North America, then as General Manager for Central Europe, situated in Frankfurt and from 2006 as General Manager for Scandinavia, situated in Copenhagen. He holds an MBA degree in International Business Economics from Aalborg University, Denmark in 2000 and has since then worked for Icelandair.

Andri Áss Grétarsson Senior Vice President of Finance and Resource Management at Icelandair
Andri Grétarsson was appointed Senior Vice President of Finance and Resource Management at Icelandair in April 2006. He joined Icelandair Group in 1998, first in Management and Financial Information department and then he worked in the Strategic and Finance division at Icelandair Group. He holds a Cand.Oceon degree from the University of Iceland and specialized in accounting.

Guðjón Arngrímsson, Vice President of Corporate Communications
Guðjón joined Icelandair in 2000 as Manager Public Relations and company spokesman. He became Director Corporate Communications at Icelandair Group in 2003. He studied English and Literature at the University of Iceland.

Guðmundur Pálsson Senior Vice President of Operations of Icelandair
Gudmundur was appointed Senior Vice President of Operations of Icelandair in 1996. He joined Icelandair Group in 1974, and initially served in the Budget and Long Range Planning Department. In 1980 he became Director of Cash Management and Insurance and served that position until 1986 when he was appointed Senior Vice President Operations and served in that capacity until 1988, when he was appointed Senior Vice President Technical.

Helgi Már Björgvinsson Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Icelandair
Helgi joined Icelandair in 1999 as Manager Icelandair Holidays USA, later to become Sales Manager Western Region. In 2002 he moved to London to become Sales and Marketing Manager UK & Ireland and in 2004 to Paris to assume the position of General Manager Southern Europe.  Helgi has been General Manager of UK & Ireland since May 2007.  He graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia in 1994 with BS degree in Marketing and Management and is finishing his MBA at ESCP-EAP European School of Management in Paris.

Hjörtur Þorgilsson Vice President of Information Technology at Icelandair
Hjörtur was appointed Vice President of Information Technology at Icelandair in January 2006. He joined Icelandair Group in 1985, started in the Technical department's cost control, became divisional manager in the Planning department in 1988 and manager in 1994, then manager of Information Development 1997. Hjörtur received his Cand.Oceon from the University of Iceland in 1985.

Jens Bjarnason Senior Vice President of Technical Services of Icelandair
Jens was appointed Senior Vice President of Technical Services of Icelandair on September 20th 2005. He joined Icelandair Group in September 1996 as Director Flight Operations after working for the Icelandic CAA as Director of Flight Safety. He is an aeronautical engineer and received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in the USA in 1992.

Una Eyþórsdóttir Vice President of Human Resources at Icelandair
Una was appointed Vice President of Human Resources at Icelandair in 2001. She joined Icelandair Group in 1975, first at the Human Resources department and between 1983-1987 in the Information Technology department, first as a supervisor and later a divisional manager, and then in Information department 1987-1996 as a divisional manager. She was appointed manager of Employee Development department in 1996. Una studied English and psychology in the University of Iceland and holds a MBA degree from the same university since 2002.
