Discover the wonders of North Iceland and search for the Northern Lights on the edge of the Arctic Circle with this exciting Icelandair holiday package.

Visit the charming town of Akureyri, located on a stunning fjord only a 45-minute flight from the capital. You can easily explore all the major spots in town on foot. Here you‘ll find a wide range of activities and interesting places e.g. notable museums, the world’s most northerly botanic garden, one of Iceland’s most popular swimming facilities and great hiking trails. Best of all, use of the city buses is completely free of charge. Akureyri also provides an excellent base for winter recreational activities such as downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, horse trekking, Super Jeep excursions and ice skating.

North Iceland is a land of amazing adventures, offering diverse options for those who want to combine relaxation with fun and excitement in a veritable paradise of nature. There are countless opportunities for outdoor activities to suit everyone's taste, including the Lake Mývatn area, by many considered the most beautiful place in Iceland. Highlights include the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Cities) full of lava-pillars and formations that are rich of mystic sagas and tales, Námaskarð pass with sulfurous mud pools and steam springs, Krafla volcano, pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir and of course Mývatn Nature Baths with its natural pool of geothermal water based in the middle of lava fields with a great view over Mývatn area.

Day 1

Welcome to the capital of North Iceland, Akureyri. Hop on your arrival transfer to your Akureyri hotel, only a short ride away. You will be met by a representative from The Travel Viking in the arrivals hall. Check in and make yourself comfortable. The evening is yours to rest and enjoy at your leisure.

Day 2

Enjoy the day in Akureyri and find out what makes it so charming. You can easily explore all the major spots in town on foot. Here you‘ll find a wide range of activities and interesting places e.g. notable museums, the world’s most northerly botanic garden and one of Iceland’s most popular swimming facilities. Venture to the amazing geothermal pool in town. Swimming pools are a staple of Icelandic daily life, so go native and enjoy a swim, a soak in the hot tubs or a steam!

The Northern Lights tour starts at 21:30 with pick-up from your hotel starting 15 minutes prior. Based on the weather conditions, your tour guide will choose the area in the countryside where you’re most likely to see the Aurora Borealis with its spectacular displays of color, light and texture.

Please Note: The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. You can re-book your Northern Lights tour the following night at no extra cost if the tour was operated but no sightings occurred.

Day 3 (note: you can extend your trip!)

Day at your leisure in Akureyri, a town of charming buildings cradled within the magnificent Eyjafjörður fjord. Though small in size, Akureyri is vibrant and lively, offering gourmet dining, galleries, outdoor cafes and pubs. The year-round botanical gardens are an interesting feature, as well as the splendid spa-like geothermal swimming pool. If you are into skiing, you can hit the magnificent slopes at the Hlíðarfjall ski area in town. Or you might want to book a day tour to the beautiful Mývatn area with volcanic craters, mud pots and lava fields. There is even scuba diving available. Just ask at the hotel for more details.

Your final day

Self-transfer to the domestic airport in Akureyri for your early morning flight. We recommend to book a taxi transfer at the hotel reception on the night before.
