Baggage Allowance

• Equipment may count towards free baggage allowance.
• Ski equipment may consist of one pair of skis, one pair of poles, and one pair of boots.
• Snowboard equipment may consist of one snowboard and one pair of boots.
• Clothing is not allowed in the bag. 
• Ski/snowboard equipment can be paid for during check-in, for the fee outlined in the table. No pre-booking required.
• Ski/snowboard equipment may be added during the booking process or prior to departure by logging in to the Manage Booking section or by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

• Fishing equipment may count towards free baggage allowance.
• Fishing equipment may not be taken on board.
• Fishing equipment may consist of the following: one tackle box or one haversack or one angler’s basket, plus one rod. All items must be in one bag or box. 
• As a preventative measure against spreading infectious diseases of freshwater fishes to Iceland from other countries, it is prohibited by law to use fishing equipment, including waders and rubber boots, which have been used while angling abroad, unless such equipment has been disinfected according to valid rules (immersion for 10 minutes in a 2% formaldehyde solution). Fishing equipment should be disinfected by a veterinarian from the country of embarkation and a certificate of disinfection must be presented when transporting the equipment to Iceland. If the rod is clearly new, unused and in original packing, there is no need for disinfection. If a certificate cannot be obtained, the fishing equipment must be handed to customs officers upon entering the country for immediate disinfection at owner’s expense. Keflavik Airport takes care of the disinfection upon arrival in Iceland. The passenger must declare the fishing gear in the RED gate, past the baggage area, to the custom officers.
• Fishing equipment can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Fishing equipment may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

• One set of golf bags may count towards free baggage allowance.
• Weight may not exceed 23 kg.
• Golf equipment can be paid for during check-in for the airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Golf equipment may be added during the booking process or prior to departure by logging in to the Manage Booking section or by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

• Skateboards are allowed as carry-on baggage with Icelandair, but some airports do not allow them through security check. Please contact the airport security at your departure airport to check the regulations. 
• Passengers can check a skateboard in as small sports equipment, if preferred.
• Skateboards can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Skateboards may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 
• For Longboards see “Other” section.

• Weapons may be counted towards the free baggage allowance.
• Weapons may not be taken on board.
• Passengers may only transport sporting weapons if they are:
  - Hunting weapons: weapons used to hunt game, birds, and other animals.
  - Target shooting firearms: firearms for target shooting, clay-pigeon shooting and competition shooting, providing the weapons are not those on standard issue to military forces.
  - Other recreational or sports-related firearms: air pistol, dart gun, starting pistol, etc.
  - Antique weapons may be accepted even though they do not comply with any of the above.
• The passenger is responsible for obtaining the import/export permits required by local governments.
• Guns must be dismantled.
• Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock.
• Ammunition must also be kept in a separate container (wood/metal/fiberboard) from the firearm and must be protected against shock and movement. 
• Weapons must be packed separately from personal checked baggage.
• Ammunition is limited to 11 lbs (5kg) per passenger.
• Passengers must contact Icelandair to add the make and model of their weapon to their booking at least 48 hours prior to departure. Weapons fee will be paid at the airport.

• An equipment bag may count towards free baggage allowance. 
• Hockey equipment may consist of 1 equipment bag plus a maximum of 2 sticks taped together.
• If carrying additional sticks, they must be taped together. The sticks will then be considered as checked baggage and follow normal excess baggage rules and fees, not small sports equipment.
• Hockey equipment can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Hockey equipment may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

• Diving equipment may be counted towards the free baggage allowance.
• Oxygen tank must be completely empty. 
• Diving lamps may be carried in the cabin. Battery precautions must be taken to ensure they do not accidentally activate (see “Other” section for battery information). 
• Maximum weight for diving equipment to be considered as small sports equipment is 44 lbs (20 kg).
• Diving equipment weighing 45-70 lbs (21-32 kg) will be classified as medium sports equipment. See below for fees.
• Diving equipment can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Diving equipment may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

• Kites may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

• Surfboards may not count towards free baggage allowance.
• A maximum of 4 surfboards may be carried per flight. Please contact us at least 48 hours prior to departure to determine if there is enough room on board. 
• Surfboards may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance. 

Bicycles cannot be checked in as part of the included baggage allowance. If you want to bring your bike with you, it can be checked in as sports equipment – as long as it meets the following criteria:

• The bicycle is in a bag or a box
• The handlebars have been turned parallel to the frame
• The pedals have been removed
• The tires have been deflated

The maximum dimensions of the bag or box containing the bicycle are 87 x 22 x 40 inches, and it must weigh less than 70 lbs.

A battery for an electric bike is NOT authorized to be carried as checked luggage. Please check with Icelandair Cargo for the shipping of your electric bike's battery.

Please note, a maximum of 25 bikes are accepted per flight.

• Kayaks may not count towards free baggage allowance.
• Maximum length of the kayak is 98 inches (2.5 meters).
• Kayaks can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required, but it is recommended to contact us in advance to ensure and book space for the kayak, as only one large sports equipment item per flight is allowed.
• Kayaks may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

• Windsurfing equipment may not count towards free baggage allowance. 
• Windsurfing equipment can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required, but it is recommended to contact us in advance to ensure and book space for the windsurf, as only one large sports equipment item per flight is allowed.
• Windsurfing equipment may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

• Vaulting poles may not count towards free baggage allowance. 
• Maximum length is 207 inches (5.25 meters).
• Maximum size is 206 x 4.7 x 4.7 in (525 x 12 x 12 cm).
• Vaulting poles can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required, but it is recommended to contact us in advance to ensure and book space for the vaulting pole, as only one large sports equipment item per flight is allowed.
• Vaulting poles may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

Passengers can carry avalanche backpacks as cabin baggage or as checked baggage with a preapproval from Icelandair. We require your booking number and the make and model of the avalanche backpack to be able to approve the bag for the flight. Avalanche backpacks must always be packed so as to prevent accidental activation as per instructions from the manufacturer. Only 1 avalanche backpack is allowed per passenger.

Please note, the United States has stricter restrictions regarding transportation of these backpacks and therefore, to fly with an avalanche backpack to the United States, you may transport the avalanche backpacks only if you remove the „pyrotechnic trigger" and/or „explosives" and empty the gas cartridges. You can contact local provider to replace the trigger at your destination.

• Drones can be taken on board as part of your carry-on baggage, as long as the batteries are approved (see below) and the drone must fall under cabin baggage size restrictions (maximum dimensions: 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches, or 55 x 40 x 20cm). Drones will count towards free carry-on allowance, if taken on board.
• Drones are accepted as checked baggage, as long as they are safely packed, their total dimension does not exceed 62 inches (158cm), and their weight is no more than 23 kg. The batteries must also be approved (see below) and they must be removed (packed separately). Drones will follow normal excess baggage fees and rules if checked in as extra baggage. Drones that are checked-in may count towards free baggage allowance.
• All spare lithium batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. We recommend packing the batteries in their original retail packaging or by insulating the terminals, i.e. placing tape over exposed terminals, or placing each battery in separate plastic bags or protective pouch. 
• Lithium ion batteries exceeding a watt-hour rating of 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh may be carried as spare batteries in carry-on baggage. In this instance a maximum of two batteries allowed per passenger.
• Drones must be approved before the flight. Passengers must contact Icelandair at least 48 hours prior to departure to add the make, model and battery information of their drone to their booking.

• Longboards need to be checked in. These will be considered as checked baggage and will follow excess baggage fees.
• Longboards may not count towards free baggage allowance.
• Longboards can be paid for during check-in, for the excess baggage airport fee. No pre-booking required.
• Longboards may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

• Walking sticks or canes may only be carried onto the aircraft if they are needed for help with reduced mobility. 
• Trekking poles for recreational use cannot be accepted as carry-on. They must be checked in with checked baggage.

• Objects with a sharp point or sharp edges capable of being used to cause serious injury are not permitted on board and in some cases, items used to knit, stitch or crochet can fall under these restrictions. 
• Please keep in mind that airport officials are within their right to confiscate knitting needles and other handcraft items if they deem that the items in question can potentially fall within the sharp objects provision.

• Small musical instruments may be carried as carry-on baggage as long as the size is within carry-on dimensions (maximum dimensions: 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches, or 55 x 40 x 20 cm). Small instruments will count towards free carry-on allowance, if taken on board.
• Passengers may bring a larger instrument on board by purchasing a seat for the instrument. Cabin crew will help you fasten the instrument in the seat during the flight. The instrument may not exceed 59 x 14 x 20 inches (150 x 35 x 50 cm) in dimensions. Please contact our service center for booking assistance.
• Checked instruments are charged according to fees for small sports equipment. Instruments may not exceed 50 lbs (23 kg) in weight and may not exceed 62 inches (158 cm) in total dimensions. Musical instruments may be counted towards the free baggage allowance.
• Checked instruments exceeding 62 inches (158 cm) in total dimensions are charged as large sports equipment.
• Instruments needing to go in the cargo hold area of the aircraft will be held in a temperature and pressure-controlled area.
• Musical instruments should always be packed in hard-shell protective cases.
• Checked musical instruments can be paid for during check-in, for the airport fee. No pre-booking required, but it is recommended to contact us in advance to ensure and book space for large musical instruments.
• Checked musical instruments may be added prior to departure by contacting our service center. A 20% discount applies compared to the airport fee, if paid in advance.

• Spare lithium batteries below 100Wh must be carried in the carry-on baggage. Electronic devices with batteries that do not exceed 100Wh can be in the checked baggage, as long as the device is turned off and packed to prevent from damage.
• Lithium batteries exceeding a watt-hour rating of 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh may be carried as spare batteries in carry-on baggage, or in equipment in either checked or carry-on baggage. In this instance a maximum of two batteries allowed per passenger. Pre-approval from Icelandair is needed to travel with batteries exceeding a watt-hour rating of 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh. Please contact Icelandair prior to your departure.
• Lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh must be transported as freight. Please contact Icelandair Cargo for further assistance.
• When carrying spare lithium batteries for laptops and/or any spare fuel cells and cartridges for the powering of electronic devices for cameras, cellphones, laptops and camcorders, items must be carried in carry-on baggage. If your carry-on baggage is removed from the cabin and stowed in the hold you must declare such items before removal.
• Batteries for electric bike's may not be checked-in as baggage. Please contact Icelandair Cargo for further assistance.
