What to see and do in Zurich
Introduction to Zurich
It's definitely not all banking and business in this beautiful city.
Zurich scores a regular spot on lists of the world's most liveable cities, and it's not hard to see why. Its charmed lifestyle and lakeside location are instantly enviable.
Sitting pretty, Zurich's Altstadt (Old Town) holds court at the northern end of Lake Zurich, on both sides of the Limmat River.
The old quarters evoke a bygone era, with winding cobbled alleys, ancient guildhalls and church steeples.
There is plenty to see and do in Zurich, Switzerland, so you’ll never be short of activities and sights to enjoy in this fantastic city.
Things to do in Zurich
There are some excellent museums to check out. A popular choice is Kunsthaus Zürich, the Art Museum of Zurich, which offers access to one of the largest art collections in Switzerland.
Saying that, if the weather is good then there's no better place to be than outdoors. Take a boat tour on the lake or find a public bath (or “badi”) to satisfy your swimming (and people-watching) needs.
Stop in at the landmark Fraumünster church, where old meets new. The ancient church is home to stunning 20th-century stained glass from artist Marc Chagall.
If it’s a stupendous view you’re looking for, take the train up Uetliberg, to the city’s highest point. At 2857 ft, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Zurich Lake and the city itself.
Many travelers also use Zurich as a stepping stone to ski resorts in the area. Ischgl comes highly recommended, with over 240 km of ski slopes to adventure on.
Where to shop in Zurich
The city's prime shopping stretch is Bahnhofstrasse, a boulevard lined with luxury boutiques, department stores and chic shops selling signature Swiss souvenirs such as watches and perfectly packaged chocolate treats.
The pedestrianized Niederdorf area of the Old Town is an enticing place to stroll. The neighborhood is home to cute stores during the day, and great restaurants and bars at night.
In the past few years, District 5 (colloquially known as Zuri-West) has emerged as Zurich’s coolest neighborhood. Wander the area for galleries, design stores and on-trend bars and cafes.
Make a beeline for Im Viadukt, a shopping area which was cleverly converted from storage sheds and is now home to fresh, creative shopping and eating options.
What to eat in Zurich
Rich and hearty Swiss fare is on offer in traditional restaurants and cozy bistros. When you think of Swiss food, we’re sure you’ll think meat and potatoes, and cheesy fondue and raclette.
The city's signature dish is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, which is sliced veal in a creamy sauce of white wine and mushrooms.
Given all that meat on offer, you may not expect to find the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant in Zurich. Haus Hiltl, for example, has been serving up delicious meat-free dishes since 1898.
Sweet-toothed visitors will rejoice at how prominent chocolate is throughout the city. Sprüngli has been making chocolate since 1836 and there are more than a dozen of their stores around town. Stop by the flagship store and cafe on Paradeplatz for truffle and macaron heaven.
