What have we done to reduce our carbon footprint?

In recent years, numerous changes have been made to Icelandair’s operations in order to reduce CO2 emissions. These include efforts to minimize fuel consumption during approach and landing and the introduction of winglets that reduce drag, allowing us to reduce the amount of fuel needed to power our flights.

Since 2019, we have offered passengers the option to take part in reducing their carbon footprint, in co-operation with Kolvidur. On this page, they could calculate their emissions to determine the amount needed.

Major developments have taken place in recent years in relation to carbon offsetting and carbon capturing. We have therefore taken our carbon calculator out of use while we develop a new and more accessible solution for carbon compensation.

In the meantime, we suggest that passengers who wish to calculate the carbon footprint of their flights go to the Kolvidur website.

The Icelandic Carbon Fund

The Icelandic Carbon Fund, Kolviður, aims to sequester carbon in plants and soil in order to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Kolviður has plantations in Geitasandur and around Úlfljótsvatn.
