Unaccompanied minor

Icelandair can arrange Unaccompanied Minor service for children who are travelling alone.

The Unaccompanied Minor service is now available on all our international flights. Please contact our service center for further information.

Mask requirements on board may vary for children - please check our mask policy before your flight.

There are no longer any COVID-related border restrictions for travel to Iceland.

Unaccompanied Minor on international flights

On Icelandair international flights an Unaccompanied Minor is a child between 5 and 11 years of age (11 inclusive) who is NOT accompanied by a person older than 12 years having the same reservation status and capable of taking full responsibility for the child.

If needed, Unaccompanied Minor service can be arranged for passengers between 12 and 15 years of age (15 inclusive). Same rules and fees apply as for passenger with mandatory Unaccompanied Minor service.

  • Booking an Unaccompanied Minor may only be done by our agents, please contact our Service Center at least 2 business days prior to departure to book this service.
  • A maximum of four Unaccompanied Minors may be carried on each flight.
  • We only accept Unaccompanied Minors on Icelandair flights; onward connections with other airlines are not possible.
  • Unaccompanied Minor service may not be booked for our Icelandair Stopover.
  • Unaccompanied Minors will board before other passengers.

It is not possible to book an Unaccompanied Minor via our website. Please contact our Service Center to book the child as an Unaccompanied Minor. This service must be confirmed at least two business days prior to departure.

Please have the information about the responsible adult guardian dropping off and picking up the child from the airport ready when you call to book.

The Unaccompanied Minor service may not be booked if the connection time in Iceland is more than three hours, this includes any stopover in Iceland.

An Unaccompanied Minor form must be filled out and printed four times. Must be presented during the check-in process at the airport.

What to expect: onboard care

  • Our cabin crew will welcome the child onboard.
  • The cabin crew will check in with your child throughout the flight.
  • As an additional safety precaution, your child will be seated at the back of the aircraft so that crew is always within a easy reach.

Only one fee is charged if two or more unaccompanied minors are travelling together in the same booking.

Transfer in Keflavík Airport

During the transfer time in Keflavík Airport the Unaccompanied Minor will be escorted by an Icelandair ground agent to a private waiting area in Keflavik Airport. The Unaccompanied Minor will also be escorted, by an Icelandair ground agent, to the aircraft before the boarding process has started.

There are two private waiting areas in Keflavik airport, one inside the Schengen area of the airport and another on the Non-Schengen area of the airport.

Unaccompanied Minor Travel Guidelines

Unaccompanied Minors must be checked-in by an adult guardian who must provide photo identification and contact information, as well as the relationship to the child. The responsible guardian must remain at the airport until the aircraft is airborne.

On arrival in the destination city, the Icelandair ground agent will also check photo identification and contact information before releasing the child to the guardian, who is predetermined in the child's booking.

  • Travel documents for the Unaccompanied Minor are placed in a special Icelandair wallet worn by the child.
  • Please note, that all Unaccompanied Minors must be confirmed at least two business days prior to departure.
  • Four copies of our Unaccompanied Minor Form should be filled out and ready during the check-in process.


Unaccompanied Minors ages 2-11 years receive a child meal and beverages brought by the cabin crew, while children 12 years and older can select food items of preference from the Economy Class menu, free of charge. 

The traveling child is also welcome to bring food on board.
