On October 8, 2020, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released figures showing the very low incidence of in-flight COVID-19 transmission. In a period where 1.2 billion passengers traveled, fewer than 50 cases were reported where transmission is thought to have been associated with flying.
Major aircraft manufacturers published studies on aircraft airflow systems that help explain why numbers are low. IATA emphasizes that wearing a face mask adds a further and significant extra layer of protection.

Our priority on board is the safety and well-being of our travelers and crew members. Wearing a face mask is mandatory on all Icelandair flights, and we require all our passengers to wear face masks from the time they board our aircraft until they disembark. We also recommend that all passengers use facial masks during their time at the airport. Please note that face shields may be worn in addition to, but not instead of face masks.
Our cabin crew will be wearing medical masks for the duration of the flight, as the health and safety of our passengers and crew is of the highest importance.
