Icelandair Welcomes San Francisco Aboard
Reykjavik, Iceland, June 2, 2018 – Today, Icelandair will take off from San Francisco International (SFO) with the return of their year-round, non-stop service to Iceland. It has been more than a decade since the carrier operated flights from the Golden City and this route will serve as the airlines 23rd North American gateway. Guests will be treated to a gate celebration including cake and an official ribbon cutting as flight 862 departs for Iceland at 3:00 pm. Icelandair’s 767-200 will inaugurate the service.
Icelandair has been in operation since 1937 and was known as the Hippie Airline during the 60’s and 70’s when students would fly Icelandair for their first trip to Europe. The airline flew prop planes that were less expensive to operate but made the journey a bit longer, their slogan was “we’re slower but we’re lower.” Today Icelandair operates a modern, fuel efficient fleet with more legroom, in-flight entertainment, and gate-to-gate Wi-Fi for all passengers.
The new route will provide more travel choices for Bay Area customers via the Icelandair hub in Reykjavik, which serves more than 25 destinations in Europe. Icelandair passengers will also enjoy a new fare structure allowing them to customize their fare based on their needs.
Flight # FI862 departs San Francisco at 3:00 p.m. (PDT) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and arrives KEF at 6:00 a.m. (GMT), just in time to start your day in Iceland or make easy connections to Europe.
