Things to see: cool campuses, cute critters

The Triangle is home to three powerhouse research universities and numerous colleges; two of them (the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University in Durham) are regular winners in lists of the country’s most beautiful campuses.

Pretty, tree-lined Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital and the state’s most visited museum is here: the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is free to visit and explore the dinosaur center, whale skeletons, live animals, and walk-through dioramas. If animals are your thing, one of the region’s best (and unexpected) sights is the Duke Lemur Center in Durham. Book ahead for a guided tour of the center, which is home to the largest collection of lemurs outside their native Madagascar.

The food scene

A big population of students and young professionals has ensured the cities of the Triangle are full of things that top livability charts – we’re talking quality museums, green spaces, live music, passion-fuelled sports, a thriving arts scene, great restaurants, food trucks, and a booming craft-beer scene.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Pepsi hail from North Carolina, but we recommend covering more of the food groups on any visit. Barbecue (preferably pork) and Southern flavors (fried chicken, biscuits and gravy) are a state-wide passion, and seasonal seafood from the coast is a winner. You can get all of this and more in the Triangle, from farm-to-table to comfort food to fine dining: Raleigh and Durham are regular chart-toppers in lists of the foodiest towns in the South.

Things to do: get out of town

North Carolina is home to big-ticket natural splendor: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the USA’s most visited national park and overflows with forest, wildlife, and waterfalls. It's called the Smokies after its ever-present morning fog. Come in late spring for the wildflowers, or fall for stunning leaf displays.

It’s 280 miles (450km) from Raleigh to the national park, but road-trippers can cross the state and make great pit stops. Asheville often appears on lists of coolest towns in the USA – its nickname is Beer City USA, thanks to more breweries per capita than any US city. Maybe plan a road trip following the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s favorite drives. It's a 469-mile (755km) route following the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, connecting Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks.

Aviation fans should head to the NC coast instead, to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk. Here, in 1903, the Wright brothers took to the air in the first powered flight.
