To ensure the safe return to service of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, for the past 20 months there has been an extensive recertification process under way, led by aviation authorities in the US and Europe.

On November 18, 2020, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced its approval of the return to service of the MAX aircraft in the US. Icelandair is working in close cooperation with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Icelandic aviation authorities, and expects that the suspension of the aircraft will be lifted in Europe and subsequently in Iceland in early 2021.

If the expected time frame is met, Icelandair plans to resume operation of the MAX aircraft in spring 2021. Upon the approval of European and local authorities, information on Icelandair’s next steps in the process will be available on the Icelandair website.
