FAQs about travel to Zurich

Helpful information for passengers flying to Zurich from the US

What US cities fly to Switzerland?

Travel to Switzerland from the US is extremely convenient thanks to Icelandair’s broad connectivity to the city of Zurich through Iceland.

Those making their way to Zurich can depart from airports in Boston, Washington D.C. and Seattle, among others.

How long are flights to Zurich?

This depends entirely on where you are flying from in the US and how long your layover is. As an example, the New York to Zurich flight time is around 10 hours.

All flights to Zurich from the USA with Icelandair include a layover in Iceland, but with one of the fastest transatlantic flight times, you’ll find the journey passes quickly.

How to find cheap flights to Switzerland?

The cheapest time to fly to Zurich is usually during the winter months, as this is when there is a slightly lower demand.

This isn’t to say that other months are a lot more expensive or that you are guaranteed cheaper flights in these months. We simply recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible.

What is the best time of year to fly to Switzerland?

Zurich’s high seasons run from May to August. With the sun setting as late as 10pm, the summer days seem like they never end.

July is the warmest month in the city, and the time when a lot of events, festivals and activities take place. Outdoorsy travelers will especially enjoy visiting Switzerland at this time of year.

In the winter months, temperatures plummet and the sun can set as early as 5pm. However, this is a perfect opportunity to embrace the coziness of the season, or head to the ski resorts to make the most of the snow.

Icelandair offers flights to Switzerland multiple times a week so you can explore Zurich on your own schedule.

What to see and do in Zurich

The bridge over Lake Zurich, leading to the city itself

Introduction to Zurich

It's definitely not all banking and business in this beautiful city.

Zurich scores a regular spot on lists of the world's most liveable cities, and it's not hard to see why. Its charmed lifestyle and lakeside location are instantly enviable.

Sitting pretty, Zurich's Altstadt (Old Town) holds court at the northern end of Lake Zurich, on both sides of the Limmat River.

The old quarters evoke a bygone era, with winding cobbled alleys, ancient guildhalls and church steeples.

There is plenty to see and do in Zurich, Switzerland, so you’ll never be short of activities and sights to enjoy in this fantastic city.

Things to do in Zurich

There are some excellent museums to check out. A popular choice is Kunsthaus Zürich, the Art Museum of Zurich, which offers access to one of the largest art collections in Switzerland.

Saying that, if the weather is good then there's no better place to be than outdoors. Take a boat tour on the lake or find a public bath (or “badi”) to satisfy your swimming (and people-watching) needs.

Stop in at the landmark Fraumünster church, where old meets new. The ancient church is home to stunning 20th-century stained glass from artist Marc Chagall.

If it’s a stupendous view you’re looking for, take the train up Uetliberg, to the city’s highest point. At 2857 ft, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Zurich Lake and the city itself.

Many travelers also use Zurich as a stepping stone to ski resorts in the area. Ischgl comes highly recommended, with over 240 km of ski slopes to adventure on.

Where to shop in Zurich

The city's prime shopping stretch is Bahnhofstrasse, a boulevard lined with luxury boutiques, department stores and chic shops selling signature Swiss souvenirs such as watches and perfectly packaged chocolate treats.

The pedestrianized Niederdorf area of the Old Town is an enticing place to stroll. The neighborhood is home to cute stores during the day, and great restaurants and bars at night.

In the past few years, District 5 (colloquially known as Zuri-West) has emerged as Zurich’s coolest neighborhood. Wander the area for galleries, design stores and on-trend bars and cafes.

Make a beeline for Im Viadukt, a shopping area which was cleverly converted from storage sheds and is now home to fresh, creative shopping and eating options.

What to eat in Zurich

Rich and hearty Swiss fare is on offer in traditional restaurants and cozy bistros. When you think of Swiss food, we’re sure you’ll think meat and potatoes, and cheesy fondue and raclette.

The city's signature dish is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, which is sliced veal in a creamy sauce of white wine and mushrooms.

Given all that meat on offer, you may not expect to find the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant in Zurich. Haus Hiltl, for example, has been serving up delicious meat-free dishes since 1898.

Sweet-toothed visitors will rejoice at how prominent chocolate is throughout the city. Sprüngli has been making chocolate since 1836 and there are more than a dozen of their stores around town. Stop by the flagship store and cafe on Paradeplatz for truffle and macaron heaven.
