Cancellation protection

We understand that life can sometimes throw unexpected curveballs your way. Our optional Cancellation Protection allows you to cancel your flight and apply for a refund in case you cannot travel as a result of you or a close family member experiencing sudden illness or an accident, an unexpected passing, or substantial damage to your home or business.

  • Under the Cancellation Protection you can apply for a full refund in accordance with the terms and conditions of this service if you're unable to travel for the reasons specified in the terms and conditions when no other refund methods are available.
  • If your journey has already begun and you need to alter your travel plans, Icelandair will reimburse the unused portion of your ticket or change fees, not including the fare difference, in accordance with our terms and conditions.

Cancellation Protection:

  • can only be purchased during the booking process or within to 36 hours of the initial reservation.
  • cannot be refunded, unless the flight for which you purchased this fare is canceled by the airline itself.
  • is not insurance but an extra service for a flight ticket.

How to file a claim

  1. Notify Icelandair: As soon as you realize you won't be able to make your flight, get in touch with Icelandair. The sooner, the better.
  2. Gather Your Documentation: You'll need a medical certificate as described in paragraph 1.3 if your cancellation is due to a medical issue. If the cancellation is due to material damage to your home or company, a police report will be required.
  3. Submit Your Claim: Send in your claim, including all required documentation, to Icelandair. All the costs associated with the production of these documents will be borne by you.
  4. Await Confirmation: Icelandair will review your claim and, if everything checks out, will process the refund within 45 days. The refund amount will be determined based on the terms and conditions of the Cancellation Protection.
  5. Double Check Insurance: If you have any insurance or compensation related to the same claim, remember that Icelandair will only pay its proportion of any compensation.
