Our aircraft to Greenland
Icelandair makes it easy for travelers to explore this huge, other-worldly island just a couple of hours flying distance from Iceland. With the opening of the new Nuuk Airport (GOH), we now fly our Boeing MAX 8 (with a capacity of 160 seats) on most of our flights between Iceland and Greenland's capital, and we fly this route all year round.
Outside of Nuuk - the largest city in Greenland - the airports we serve are mainly small, with short runways only capable of handling smaller aircraft such as our De Havilland Canada (DHC) Dash 400 and 200. Due to the smaller size of the Dash, our service on board is limited compared to that on board the larger Boeing aircraft, and baggage allowance may differ.

Fly to Greenland in summer
Although Greenland experiences four distinct seasons, it's the peak summer and winter months that tend to draw the most visitors. Travelers looking to spend summer in Greenland can expect stunning nature and long days to enjoy it.
Summer in Greenland runs between June and August and this is a prime time for watching the landscape come to life. We fly to 4 cities in Greenland in summer: Nuuk, Ilulissat, Kulusuk, and Qaqortoq.
With comparatively warmer weather and endless summer nights, there are plenty of things to do in Greenland in the summer months. You can enjoy long days under the midnight sun, observe tundra in bloom, or go on memorable hiking and boating expeditions. Enjoy breathtaking landscapes, iceberg-filled fjords, and unique wildlife-spotting opportunities (from whales to musk ox) – there are plenty of summertime reasons to get to know Greenland better.
Winter in Greenland: What to expect
Winter runs between October and March. This is the time of year when temperatures drop and the landscape is covered in a sheet of white snow, and you'll need the right gear to stay warm. Those traveling to Greenland in winter will experience shorter daylight hours, but you can enjoy the stunning snowscapes, and the longer nights bring greater opportunity to spot the northern lights across the country.
In winter, parts of Greenland are inaccessible except by dogsleds, boats, and snowmobiles, creating a real winter wonderland adventure. No matter when you visit Greenland, you're guaranteed the trip of a lifetime.
Due to the dark night skies, the winter also provides ideal viewing conditions for the northern lights in Greenland. While this natural phenomenon technically occurs year-round it is only visible in the winter months. Travelers can see the aurora in Greenland simply from the comfort of their hotel, or else book guided northern lights tours. Note that as a natural phenomenon, the appearance of the aurora is of course not guaranteed, but Greenland is nevertheless a top northern lights destination!

How to get around Greenland
There are no trains and roads between communities in Greenland, due to the great distances between them. The main forms of transport include airplanes, boats, helicopters, and dog-sledding. Traveling from A to B by boat or ferry is the most cost-effective way to travel in Greenland, and plenty of international visitors arrive to board cruises around Greenland – a popular way to explore the country.
That said, many travelers opt for plane travel due to the speed and comfort of the journey, not to mention the bird's-eye views. Those looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience might opt to take a helicopter over the incredible ice-covered wilderness of the country, but if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground and still enjoy an unforgettable experience, try dog-sledding through the stunning landscapes with a local expert.
