Ever wondered what a volcano looks like on the inside? This unique volcano tour, only available during the summer season, literally takes you inside a dormant volcano, through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber.
Thrihnukagigur volcano is the only place on earth where it's safe to explore a magma chamber from the inside. The volcano has not erupted for 4000 years and shows no signs of coming to life again anytime soon.
Head out of Reykjavik by car to the volcano (approximately 25 minutes' drive). You'll then walk over a genuine Icelandic lava field to approach the volcano (moderate level hiking, 2 out of 5, about 30-40 minutes). When you reach the volcano, your group will use an open elevator system to descend 400 feet into the ground. (All equipment and processes have been tested extensively and approved by the administration of Occupational Safety and Health in Iceland.) The landscapes are amazing and intriguing.
Note: Passengers should be in reasonable physical shape for this tour, moderate walking on unpaved surface required.
Wear: Hiking boots (essential), wind- and waterproof outer jacket. Dress for cool temperatures, as the crater is about 6°C (43°F) year-round.
Bring: Bottled water, camera, good spirits - this tour is all about having fun!
