Discover rural retreats outside your favorite city
According to Skyscanner, in 2024, 85% of US travelers plan to make the same number of international trips, if not more, than they did in 2023. And alongside destinations closer to home, European locations like the UK, Italy and Spain all ranked in the top five most visited places by US travelers in 2023.
While Europe’s vibrant cities are amazing places to visit, they can often be overwhelming, with all the sightseeing and activities leaving little time for any rest or relaxation – the real reason many of us go on vacation in the first place!
Luckily, if you’re looking for some relief from the hustle and bustle, there are plenty of nearby places you can visit to get a break from these fast-paced cities.
Zooming in on locations just outside five of the most popular European cities – London, Reykjavík, Rome, Dublin, and Barcelona – we’ve put together an index to determine the ultimate rural escape in each area. We’ve ranked seven surrounding rural locations for each city based on factors such as beauty (number of Instagram hashtags), average restaurant ratings, and the number of outdoor activities, revealing the ultimate country escape to enjoy while on a city break.
To help you get a feel for each of these major cities, we’ve also put together a selection of Spotify playlists to listen to while you’re packing or on the plane to get excited for your trip! (To access the playlists, open the Spotify app on your phone, then use the camera icon within the app's search mode to scan the code that appears on each map. We've also linked to the playlists in our methodology and sources information, below.)
So, whether you’re flying from New York to London or Seattle to Barcelona, make sure to set aside some time in your itinerary to enjoy these more rural locations and take some time to relax.

The health benefits of country escapes
To highlight just how good for you spending time in more rural destinations can be, we asked life coach, Bayu Prihandito, and UK-based GP, Dr. Hana Patel, what they thought were the main benefits of spending time in nature. Read on for their thoughts!
Managing stress
“Nature has this natural power to bring us back to the present moment, to ground us back to our roots away from our internal chatter often filled with worries and stress. So for our minds, nature is almost like a 'reset button', back to baseline, back to a state of calmness and peace.” – Bayu Prihandito, life coach
Boosting mental health
“There is growing evidence to suggest that being in nature has positive effects on people’s mental health. Studies have shown that green spaces can lower levels of stress and reduce rates of depression and anxiety, reduce cortisol levels, and improve general well-being. Not only can a simple walk in nature boost your mood but also improve your cognitive function and memory.” – Dr. Hana Patel, GP
Encouraging reflection
“Escaping to the countryside often brings our creativity and problem-solving skills to the surface. Because our minds are more calm and present in nature, we're now able to get a bigger picture of our problems, or new ideas can now be 'seen' and considered.” - Bayu Prihandito, life coach
Getting active
“[Doing outdoor activities is] good for us and to aid in our mental and physical health - exercise prevents and treats many diseases and lifts your mood. A daily brisk walk can give your body a boost, lift your mood, and make everyday activities easier.” – Dr. Hana Patel, GP
