Ilulissat's natural wonder
These majestic icy sculptures calve from edge of the Greenland ice sheet at Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the most productive glaciers on Earth, before floating steadily down the 34-mile-long (55km) Ilulissat Icefjord and, eventually, out to sea.
Flightseeing trips by helicopter or small aircraft are understandably popular in this part of the world. Scenic boat and kayaking trips can take you out among the icebergs to help you appreciate this natural wonder from different perspectives. Visit Ilulissat and you'll easily come to understand the Icefjord's inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

One of the loveliest areas to explore lies not far south of town, at Sermermiut - a former Inuit settlement located in a valley at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord. Here, a network of walking trails begins, taking you down to the shoreline and incredible vantage points of the Icefjord. There are boardwalks in some areas, but good hiking shoes are a must, as the terrain can be rocky, muddy, and marshy.
Also in this area you’ll find the Icefjord Centre, a stunning exhibition and educational center dedicated to telling the stories of the surrounding ice. It opened in 2021 in an architectural marvel, with a design inspired by a snowy owl landing on a mountain. Visitors can get an even better view of the beautiful surroundings by walking up on the roof of the centre.
