A Stroll Through Time

A traveler arriving in Frankfurt’s Haubtbahnhof railway station, an imposing 19th-century structure, steps out onto the main street Kaiserstraße, one of the few places where architecture from the 18th-century survives after the devastation of the Second World War. He keeps walking and eventually enters the financial district of Europe’s economic hub, populated by late 20th-century skyscrapers. On he goes, and finally he ends up on a breezy plaza where the environment appears medieval. The houses he sees are accurate reconstructions of buildings from the renowned medieval center which existed here before the war. Only a few steps away flows the river Main, a constant element in an ever-changing city.

Greenery, Museums and Apfelwein

On the banks of the river you’ll find the city’s museum district, commonly referred to as Museumsufer. Here visitors can explore history, art, nature, world culture, film and much else. From the city center, make your way across one of the bridges over the river, into the southern part of Frankfurt. Try the locally produced “Apfelwein” in the cider bars of the cobble-stoned pedestrian streets in the Alt-Sachsenhausen neighborhood. Or move beyond the city and visit the plentiful green public grounds in its surroundings.
